Moyes Doubtful of Everton's European Qualification After Thrilling Draw with Man City

📅 2026-05-04

David Moyes admitted Everton’s hopes of securing European football next season are in jeopardy following their dramatic 3-3 draw with Manchester City.

The Toffees took a 3-1 lead in the second half after Thierno Barry netted twice, sandwiching Jake O’Brien’s header, but Jeremy Doku’s 97th-minute equalizer denied them victory. Barry’s leveler (67:55) and O’Brien’s go-ahead goal (72:39) came within 284 seconds of each other, overturning Doku’s first-half opener.

Everton have now conceded stoppage-time goals in their last three matches (D1 L2), leaving Moyes frustrated. When questioned about their European prospects, he told Sky Sports, "I’m not sure. I think it’s going to be tough. In the last couple of games, we’ve lost late and today we’ve drawn. It could—and probably will—affect our final position."

Moyes criticized his team’s defensive lapse for City’s second goal, adding, "We let ourselves down with poor defending. At halftime, we’d have taken the result because we were outplayed in the first half. The players fought back brilliantly, but at 3-1, we should have seen it."

Barry, who became the third substitute to score a Premier League brace against Pep Guardiola’s City—after Anthony Martial (October 2022) and Samuel Chukwueze (December 2025)—urged Everton to stay focused. "It’s always a pleasure to play against a big team like City," he said. "I’m happy with my goals, but we must keep pushing. There are three games left—we’ll take it step by step."

Everton’s substitutes have contributed five league goals this season, all from Barry (three) or Beto (two).
