Luis Enrique Stunned by Unprecedented Intensity in PSG's 5-4 Win Over Bayern

📅 2026-04-28

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique admitted he had never witnessed a match of such intensity after his side's 5-4 victory over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final. The reigning European champions will head into next week's second leg at the Allianz Arena with a narrow one-goal advantage, having surrendered part of their 5-2 lead.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembélé each scored twice, with João Neves also finding the net, as PSG edged the highest-scoring semi-final in Champions League history. The only other semi-final to feature nine goals was Eintracht Frankfurt's 6-3 win over Rangers in the 1959-60 European Cup. Only four Champions League matches have seen more goals: Borussia Dortmund's 8-4 victory over Legia Warsaw in 2016, Monaco's 8-3 win against Deportivo La Coruña in 2003, Bayern's 9-2 thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb in 2024, and their 8-2 demolition of Barcelona in 2020.

This marked the first time both teams scored four goals in a European competition semi-final and only the second instance in a Champions League knockout match, following Chelsea's 4-4 draw with Liverpool in the 2008-09 quarter-finals.

"We showed the quality of both teams. I’ve never experienced a match with this intensity and such a desire to win," Luis Enrique told Canal+. "The fans of both sides enjoyed this spectacle. Physically, we never gave up. I’ve never seen a rhythm like this."

He added, "We must congratulate both teams and all the players. When you lead by three goals, the opponent takes risks, and they’re at an extremely high level. It was complicated, and the second leg will be the same. This is only their third loss this season. We’re pleased. Both teams have shown their identities."

The win marked a milestone for Luis Enrique, who reached 50 Champions League victories in just 77 matches—the fastest any manager has achieved the feat.

Bayern, meanwhile, advanced to the semi-finals after a high-scoring quarter-final against Real Madrid, winning 6-4 on aggregate following a 4-3 second-leg triumph. This is the first time since October-November 1973 that they have conceded three or more goals in consecutive European Cup or Champions League matches. That season, they went on to lift the trophy for the first time.

Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano, who scored in the match, remained confident ahead of the return leg. "We wanted to win, no doubt," he said. "There’s one game left, at home, and nothing is decided. It will be a battle, very intense with many duels. But we’ll do everything to prove we’re at home. They’ll have to come to the Allianz Arena, and we’ll defend our colors."
