Leeds' "Job Is Not Done" Despite Burnley Victory, Says Calvert-Lewin

📅 2026-05-01

Leeds United are close to securing their Premier League survival but striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin remains cautious, stressing that "our job is not done."

A 3-1 win over Burnley lifted Leeds to 14th in the table, giving them a nine-point buffer above the relegation zone. Anton Stach opened the scoring within eight minutes, while second-half goals from Noah Okafor and Calvert-Lewin sealed the victory. Burnley’s Loum Tchaouna netted a consolation, but Leeds maintained control to extend their unbeaten league run to six matches.

With 43 points (10 wins, 13 draws, 12 losses), Leeds are on the verge of safety—no team has ever been relegated with that tally in a 38-game Premier League season. A win against 18th-placed Tottenham in their next fixture would confirm their top-flight status.

Calvert-Lewin, who has scored seven league goals at Elland Road this season (13 overall), dismissed speculation about his World Cup prospects, focusing instead on Leeds' survival bid. "I’ll be honest, it [the World Cup] is not something I look to," he told Sky Sports. "My focus has been ensuring we stay in the Premier League. Until that’s mathematically done, our job isn’t finished. Performing well for the club naturally puts you in contention for the national team, so I’ll keep scoring and let the rest take care of itself."

Manager Daniel Farke echoed the sentiment, calling the win "massive" but emphasizing that celebrations would wait until safety is confirmed. "I’m proud of the boys for delivering in a crucial period. The job isn’t done yet, but 43 points is a good position," he said.

For Burnley, already relegated, the defeat marked their 23rd league loss this season—a tally only exceeded three times in their history. They have also conceded 10 goals in the opening 10 minutes of matches, the second-worst record in Premier League history for that timeframe. Defender Maxime Esteve admitted their poor start cost them, saying, "We began badly, and teams punish us when we lose momentum. We have three games left to give everything and finish with pride."
