Lampard Praises Coventry's "Special and Unique" Premier League Promotion

📅 2026-04-17

Frank Lampard hailed Coventry City’s "special and unique" achievement as they secured promotion to the Premier League, ending a 25-year absence from the top flight.

Needing only a point against Blackburn Rovers to confirm their return, Coventry side held on for a 1-1 draw. Blackburn started strongly and took the lead in the 54th minute through Ryoya Morishita, but Bobby Thomas’s header 30 minutes later ensured the crucial result.

The point leaves Coventry 13 points clear of third-place Millwall at the Championship summit, sealing promotion with three games remaining. Their current tally of 86 points is the highest in the club’s league history (adjusted for three points per win), and they will compete in the Premier League for the first time since 2001.

"This is a serious, serious football club. I grew up with them as a top-flight club, but I didn’t realise," Lampard told Sky Sports. "Mark Robins has done an incredible job. To secure automatic promotion as a non-parachute team with three games left… These players have achieved something special and unique."

Reflecting on the match, Lampard added, "Incredible moment. We weren’t at our fluid best, but the quality of the cross and the power of the header… Coming here and getting a point at this stage isn’t easy. For this to happen after 25 years… Wow. We’ve fallen in love, and this ranks among my proudest achievements as a manager."

Lampard, who took charge in November 2024, narrowly missed promotion last season after a playoff semi-final defeat to Sunderland. This year, Coventry are well-placed to clinch the Championship title if they can fend off Ipswich Town, who have two games in hand.

Goalscorer Thomas described the moment as "amazing," saying, "It’s been a hell of a season and a project over three years. We deserve this. We gave the fans the point they needed. Now we must push on to win the title."
