Kompany Hails "Tremendous Gift" as Bayern Reach DFB-Pokal Final
📅 2026-04-23Vincent Kompany described reaching the DFB-Pokal final as a "tremendous gift" after Bayern Munich secured a 2-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the semifinals. Harry Kane and Luis Díaz found the net for Bayern, who advanced to their first final in the competition since the 2019-20 season, when they last lifted the trophy.
Bayern delivered a commanding performance, registering 2.6 expected goals (xG) from 20 shots, while Leverkusen managed just 0.3 xG from four attempts. Kane’s goal marked his seventh in this season’s DFB-Pokal, equaling Robert Lewandowski’s tally from 2018-19. Only Thomas Müller, with eight goals in the 2013-14 campaign, has scored more in a single edition of the tournament this century.
For Kompany, this will be his first DFB-Pokal final as Bayern’s manager, a milestone the Belgian acknowledged with pride. "Since day one, everyone has been talking about Berlin. Being able to bring the club back there is a tremendous gift," he said. "We played very well in the first half—high intensity, we didn’t allow them anything. Leverkusen improved in the second half and pushed us deeper, but we handled it well. We’re enjoying this moment because it’s about titles, and we’re still competing on all fronts."
Bayern have already secured the Bundesliga title this season and are set to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semifinals. Despite the upcoming European clash, Kompany emphasized the importance of their next league fixture against Mainz. "Theoretically, we’ll switch focus to Mainz, even though we’ve already won the title," he said. "We have a clear routine for match preparation, and I don’t want to change that process because every game matters."
