Juventus on the Right Path to Compete for Serie A Title, Says Spalletti
📅 2026-04-20Luciano Spalletti believes Juventus is showing promising signs of becoming a Serie A title contender in the coming years following their 2-0 victory over Bologna on Sunday. The win at Allianz Stadium, secured by goals from Jonathan David and Khephren Thuram in each half, strengthened Juventus' hold on a top-four position.
The Bianconeri are peaking at a crucial stage, having won three consecutive Serie A matches without conceding for the first time since March 2025 under Thiago Motta. Additionally, they have earned 17 points from their last seven league games (five wins, two draws), the highest tally in the league during that period.
Juventus also capitalized on Como's defeat to Sassuolo on Friday, extending their lead over Cesc Fàbregas' side in fifth place to five points. According to Opta's supercomputer, they now have an 85.3% chance of securing a Champions League spot. The club has not won the Scudetto since the 2019-20 season under Maurizio Sarri, but Spalletti is optimistic about ending their six-year wait.
"There is certainly a lot of responsibility and pressure here, but the team is trying to play good football, the players care for each other, and are ready to share the burden. That is fundamental for a coach," Spalletti told DAZN Italia, as quoted by Football Italia. "We are on the right track, and every day I see something more, so we want to keep going like this."
Juventus' recent form has brought them within three points of AC Milan and Napoli, with their defensive solidity playing a key role. They have kept clean sheets in five of their last six league matches (one draw), just one fewer than in their first 18 games under Spalletti.
The attack has also contributed significantly, with Jonathan David involved in 10 Serie A goals this season (six goals, four assists). Among players born in 2000 or later, only Erling Haaland and Amine Gouiri have recorded double-digit goal involvements in each of the last six seasons in Europe's top five leagues.
Despite dominating the match against Bologna, generating an expected goals (xG) total of 1.1 from 14 shots compared to Bologna's 0.5 from seven attempts, Juventus could have scored more. Goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio was untested throughout the game.
Spalletti emphasized the importance of maintaining intensity ahead of their next Serie A fixture against Milan on April 25. "What we absolutely could not do wrong, seeing the other results, was dropping our intensity because we could see ourselves maintaining this position regardless of our performance," he said. "That was the risk, so we needed to have the right attitude from the start and maintain it."
He also acknowledged Bologna's challenges, stating, "We knew that Bologna had a tough week with travel and the Europa League, so we knew that if we maintained the intensity, it would give us a significant advantage. Everyone did that really well, and we scored early. There were times when the quality of Bologna forced us back, but that’s inevitable with a strong side like Vincenzo Italiano’s."
