Hollingshead's Late Equalizer Secures 2-2 Draw for LAFC Against San Diego
📅 2026-05-03Ryan Hollingshead scored 14 minutes into second-half stoppage time to salvage a 2-2 draw for Los Angeles FC against Western Conference rivals San Diego FC.
San Diego appeared poised to end their eight-match winless streak after taking a 2-0 lead with just eight minutes remaining in regulation. Marcus Ingvartsen opened the scoring with a downward header in the seventh minute and added a second goal in the second half, firing into the bottom-left corner following another assist from Anders Dreyer.
LAFC reduced the deficit when Denis Bouanga converted from a tight angle, assisted by substitute Son Heung-min, who entered the match after head coach Marc Dos Santos made tactical changes following a midweek CONCACAF Champions Cup victory over Toluca.
A lengthy stoppage time ensued after San Diego goalkeeper CJ dos Santos suffered a bloody nose while making a close-range save against Bouanga. In the 114th minute, Hollingshead capitalized on a goalmouth scramble to beat substitute goalkeeper Duran Ferree and secure a dramatic point for LAFC.
The result keeps LAFC third in the Western Conference, seven points behind leaders San Jose Earthquakes, who drew 1-1 with Toronto FC. Second-placed Vancouver Whitecaps and fourth-placed Seattle Sounders also played to 1-1 draws against the LA Galaxy and Sporting Kansas City, respectively.
Hollingshead’s equalizer was the third-latest stoppage-time goal in MLS history, trailing only Tom Barlow (90+17, New York Red Bulls vs. San Jose Earthquakes, 2023) and Mateusz Bogusz (90+15, Houston Dynamo vs. Portland Timbers, 2026). The goal also made Hollingshead the highest-scoring defender in MLS regular-season history with 32 goals, surpassing Graham Zusi.
Both teams outperformed their expected goals (xG), with San Diego recording 1.04 xG from eight shots and LAFC posting 0.78 xG from nine attempts.
