Farke Confident Leeds Will Avoid Relegation After "Priceless" Draw at Bournemouth

📅 2026-04-23

Daniel Farke expressed optimism about Leeds United’s Premier League survival after securing what he called a "priceless" point in a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth.

The match at the Vitality Stadium on Wednesday saw Sean Longstaff come off the bench to score a dramatic 97th-minute equalizer. Junior Kroupi had given Bournemouth the lead in the 60th minute, but a James Hill own-goal leveled the score before Rayan put the hosts back in front late in the game. Longstaff’s late strike, however, ensured Leeds left with a point.

Leeds are now unbeaten in their last six away league matches (W1 D5), their longest such run since August-October 2001. The result extends their cushion over the relegation zone to nine points, with Opta’s supercomputer giving them just a 0.2% chance of going down.

Farke remained cautious, telling BBC Match of the Day: "I’ve been in this game long enough—we’ll celebrate when it’s mathematically certain. It’s too early. We’re on 40 points, unbeaten in seven games across all competitions, so I’m confident. Why should we lose the last four?"

Leeds now shift focus to an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea, who recently parted ways with head coach Liam Rosenior.

Bournemouth dominated chances, posting an expected goals (xG) tally of 1.45 from 17 shots compared to Leeds’ 0.83 from 10 attempts. Farke praised his team’s resilience: "I’m proud of my boys. We’ve lost a lot of energy lately, but today was about fight, mentality, and belief. Bournemouth were the better side, but we found a way to battle through setbacks. This point is priceless."

Bournemouth missed a chance to climb to sixth, remaining one point behind Brighton in the European race. Despite the late setback, they extended their unbeaten league run to 14 games (W6 D8), the longest active streak in Europe’s top five leagues. However, only Newcastle (25) have dropped more points from winning positions than Bournemouth (20) this season.

Manager Andoni Iraola was frustrated, claiming Leeds’ equalizer should have been disallowed for offside: "We’re angry. Conceding in the 96th minute, with a clear offside—[Joel] Piroe affected the keeper. It’s unacceptable. Those two points are decisive at this stage."
