De Zerbi Unmoved by Tottenham's Escape from Relegation Zone

📅 2026-05-03

Roberto De Zerbi stated he felt "nothing" after Tottenham climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone, emphasizing that the season is far from over.

Spurs secured a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, with first-half goals from Conor Gallagher and Richarlison setting the foundation for the win. Despite a late headed goal from Emiliano Buendia for Villa, Tottenham held on to claim back-to-back league wins for the first time since the opening two matchdays of the season.

The 2-0 lead after 25 minutes marked the earliest Tottenham had scored twice in a Premier League match since their 4-0 win over Southampton in December 2024. Before halftime, De Zerbi’s side dominated, registering eight attempts—four on target, one hitting the post—while restricting Villa to no shots on goal and just one touch in their box.

Though pleased with his team’s performance, De Zerbi downplayed the significance of moving above West Ham into 17th place. "We played against Aston Villa, they are a very good team," he told TNT Sports. "A lot of very good players, a great manager, but we played very well for 60 minutes without the ball and with the ball."

He acknowledged defensive lapses, particularly against Ollie Watkins and Buendia, but praised his players’ resilience. "I’m pleased with this performance. I know how much they have suffered this season. The high pressure is about mentality and possession. We played well when attacking or shooting. My job is to help them show their capabilities."

When asked about escaping the bottom three, De Zerbi remained cautious. "Nothing, because the season is not finished yet. We have three more games, starting with Leeds United on Monday. They are playing very well. We can’t forget how difficult things were before the Wolves match. Those memories must stay with us."

Gallagher, who opened the scoring with his first goal for Tottenham, expressed satisfaction with the result. "It’s been a perfect night, but hopefully just the start," he said. "I’m happy with my first goal—it’s a relief—and hopefully more will come. De Zerbi has been fantastic. Every player has responded to him; he brings out the best in us."
