De Zerbi: Future at Tottenham Hinges on Board Relationship, Not Relegation
📅 2026-04-17Roberto De Zerbi has stated that his future at Tottenham will not be determined by potential Premier League relegation, provided the club’s leadership remains aligned with his vision.
The Italian manager signed a five-year contract upon joining Spurs, despite their precarious league position, and vowed in his first interview to remain "the coach of Tottenham next season no matter what." His tenure began with a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland, leaving the club 18th in the table, two points from safety with six games remaining.
Tottenham are the only Premier League side without a win in 2026 (D5 L9) and have secured just one victory in their last 26 league matches (D7 L18). According to Opta’s supercomputer, they face a 49.7% chance of relegation. However, De Zerbi remains confident he will stay if his relationship with the board remains strong.
"The problem is not the league," De Zerbi told Sky Sports. "The problem is to keep the relationship with the board and to have the same ideas in the project. Everyone on the same page."
De Zerbi’s first home game in charge will be against his former club Brighton. Spurs are winless in their last three Premier League meetings with the Seagulls (D1 L2). Only one of Tottenham’s last 13 managers lost their first home game—his predecessor, Igor Tudor, against Arsenal in February. The club has also lost their last four home matches.
"I have to get to know my players better every week," De Zerbi said in his pre-match press conference. "We have no time to lose. We must focus only on the next game and transfer confidence."
He emphasized the importance of instilling his football philosophy while fostering a positive atmosphere and strong player relationships. "In this moment, player quality matters, but spirit and unity are equally crucial. We must take responsibility—no excuses. We need players with personality and character. Otherwise, they don’t play with me."
A win against Brighton could lift Spurs out of the relegation zone, with West Ham not playing until Monday against Crystal Palace.
