Could Julian Alvarez Make a Move to Barcelona This Summer?

While Barcelona’s Champions League campaign ended in disappointment this month, Hansi Flick’s team is poised to secure the La Liga title comfortably in the coming days. With a commanding nine-point lead over rivals Real Madrid, the Catalan club has reaffirmed its dominance in Spanish football.

Despite ongoing financial constraints, Barcelona is reportedly preparing for an active summer transfer window. Although their European exit came at the hands of Atletico Madrid, the club is now targeting Diego Simeone’s star forward, Julian Alvarez.

Speculation persists that Robert Lewandowski could depart Barcelona after four seasons, with Alvarez emerging as Flick’s top priority. The reigning Spanish champions are reportedly prepared to spend over €100 million to secure his signature.

Alvarez, who joined Atletico Madrid in August 2024 for £81.5 million, has thrived in Spain, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most sought-after attackers. The Argentine international left Manchester City in search of a leading role, distancing himself from a backup position behind Erling Haaland, and has since become Atletico’s key figure.

While Alvarez remains focused on Atletico’s upcoming Champions League semi-final clash against Arsenal, Barcelona has made no secret of their interest. The World Cup winner has yet to commit his long-term future to Atletico, and Flick has identified him as his ideal summer signing.

Atletico values Alvarez above the £104 million they received for Antoine Griezmann’sale to Barcelona in 2019. However, the Catalan club has already initiated preliminary discussions, aiming to finalize a deal before Alvarez joins Argentina for the World Cup in June.

Expected to partner Lionel Messi in Argentina’s attack this summer, Atletico has insisted they will not be pressured into selling their top scorer. Alvarez’s contract runs until 2030, and ESPN reports that his €500 million release clause remains intact, with Atletico also exploring a lucrative extension to deter Barcelona’s advances.

Despite the financial challenges of securing the deal, Alvarez remains Barcelona’s primary target. Sporting director Deco has held multiple meetings with the player’s representatives, though no significant progress has been made. Atletico is determined to retain their star, valuing him even higher than Barcelona’s current offer.
