Carrick Enjoys Role as Manchester United Head Coach After Securing Champions League Spot
📅 2026-05-04Michael Carrick has described his role as Manchester United head coach as feeling "pretty natural" after guiding the team to Champions League qualification for next season. United's 3-2 victory over Liverpool on Sunday secured their place in the top five, ensuring a return to UEFA's premier club competition.
Kobbie Mainoo, who recently signed a new five-year contract with the club, scored the decisive goal, extending United's lead over sixth-place Bournemouth to 12 points with three matches remaining. Since replacing Ruben Amorim in January, Carrick has overseen a remarkable turnaround, with United accumulating more Premier League points (32) than any other team during his tenure.
"I love doing what I'm doing, and it's a great position for me to be in," Carrick said. "It feels pretty natural, to be honest. I'm not being blasé because it's a difficult role, but it feels like I've been here a long time. I understand what it entails, and being in this position is a good place to be."
Under Carrick, United have won eight of their nine Premier League home games (including his interim spell in 2021), making him only the sixth manager—and the first Englishman—to achieve that feat in the competition. The last manager to do so was Antonio Conte in 2016-17.
Carrick, who initially signed a short-term contract upon his return to Old Trafford, is now the leading candidate to take the job permanently. Reflecting on the team's progress, he said, "When we came in, the Champions League seemed a bit distant. To be where we are with three games left brings a lot of satisfaction, but that can't be everything."
